Toddler Teepee Tutorial

Hi everyone! I'm back with my Teepee Tutorial that I promised. This little teepee tent is so fun to make as a gift for that little toddler in your life. It may look like a lot, but seriously you only need a weekend, and it goes by really quick! This is way more detailed though, than my first tutorial for the heart sweatshirt, so hang with me and feel free to send any question my way!

Follow the link below to view the tutorial.

Materials you'll need:
  • 3 yards solid fabric
  • 1/2 or 1 yard printed fabric (depends on direction of the design)
  • Matching or contrasting thread (your preference)
  • 4 wooden poles 3/4" diameter AND at least 48" long
  • Rotary cutter and cutting mat (makes it so much easier!) OR fabric scissors and tape measure
  • Sewing machine
Total Cost: $25-$30 dollars, though it really depends on your fabric choice.

Step 1: Cut out the fabric as follows.

*Note the x2 and x3 means you will need that quantity of that piece.
*Also note that the printed fabric with the x2 needs to be mirror imaged due to the print only being on the front of fabric.

Step 2: Hem edge of each piece where solid and print fabric will meet.

*Before you join the print and solid pieces together, you'll want to hem their edges because you don't want fraying unfinished material to show on the inside of the teepee.
*You should have 13 edges to hem (7 on the side with door & 2 on each of the other three sides)
*Fold hems about 1/2 inch and then 1/2 inch over that.f

Step 3: Sew the hemmed edges together.

*Only sew the hemmed edges where the solid and print fabric meet. The top of the door will be sewn together later.

Step 4: Finishing the side with the door opening.

*You should have 3 side triangle pieces now with raw edges all the way around and only seamed where the solid and print fabric meet.
*You also have 2 half triangles to make the door. This step is where you will finish the door opening side, which will complete your 4th triangle.

Step 5: Sew the top hems of the door opening to the small triangle top.

*Refer to Step 3 for how to sew the hemmed edges together.

Step 6: Sewing all four triangle sides together.

* By now, all 4 sides should be completed but still with raw edges all around the outside.
*This step is where we sew them together to make the teepee shape, the inside seems do not need hemmed because the pole seams will cover up the edges.
*You should zigzag or serge the seams though, so they do not fray.
* Make sure to LINE UP the edges where the patterned & solid meet, so that they aren't uneven. If the bottom or tops are uneven that's okay you can even that out when you hem those in the next step.

Step 7: Hem the top edge and bottom edge all the way around.

*Now you should have a teepee but with no slots for the poles. (Sorry all the pics have the pole, I just forgot to take the pic before they were in place.)
*Trim any uneven spots around the top or bottom.
* You need to hem around the top and bottom edges, refer to Step 2 on how to hem.
*The top edge should have a big enough opening that you can sew it on the machine by removing your tray. if you don't think it will, then hem the top edge before sewing the last triangle to the first.

Step 8: YAY, the final step! Sewing the openings for the poles.

*Make sure the teepee is right side out, like shown in the pics.
*The seam should be made 1 1/4" from the side seams, to allow the pole to fit through.
*Sew from the very top to the very bottom.
*Do the same for all four sides.
* check to make sure the pole fits snugly in it's opening... I had to do a few of them over myself. What A Pain! But your almost done, so it's worth it.

Step 9: Ah, I said the last one was it.... just kidding. Put the poles in place and admire your work!!!

... and enjoy the cuteness!

Sorry it's so long, but it's picture heavy, so it shouldn't be too bad I hope. Send me your questions or comments, I'd love to here them!
